We have utilized SuperHeaters™ on several occasions in the past five years to remove and/or assemble the casing bolts on our 90 MW Steam Turbine. Some of the casing bolts are high temperature alloyed steel while the others are Inconnel. We have performed visual and non destructive testing including induction testing on our casing bolts post removal by flame heating and found them to be in like new condition.
One occasion we had two bolt heating companies on site performing separate work. One company was an induction bolt heating company and the other was SuperHeaters™. On this occasion the induction heating company's equipment failed about halfway through the reassembly of our steam turbine. They were not able to repair their equipment so we asked SuperHeaters™ to complete the remaining work. SuperHeaters™ mobilized and was able to accomplish in two hours what had taken the induction heating crew eight hours to accomplish.
In my opinion flame heating of large bolts is superior to resistance heating & to induction heating in that less stress is exerted on the bolt. The flame heating method heats the bolt rapidly allowing for easy removal of the nut before it over heats. The time saving and hence unit downtime is dramatically reduced. I estimate we gain about eight hours during disassembly and a further eight hour on assembly when we use SuperHeaters™ flame heating as opposed to induction heating.
